Restrictive Diets Are Difficult To Maintain

Many people start a diet with the best intentions. They are motivated, ready to make changes and determined to see results. However, the problem often begins when they choose an approach that is too restrictive or difficult to maintain in everyday life.

At the beginning, cutting out favourite foods, reducing portition sizes dramatically or following a strict meal plans might seem manageable. But as time goes on, these restrictions can become frustrating. Social occasions, busy work scheduels, hunger and cravings can make the diet harder to follow. When someone eventully goes back to their previous eating habits, they may regain some or all of the weight they lost.

This can create a cycle of starting a new diet, making progress, struggling to maintain it and then starting again. Over time, this can leave people feeling fustrated and believing they lack willpower, when the real issue may be that their approach was never realistic for their lifestyle.

So, what should you do instead?

The answer isn't necessarily another diet. Instead, focus on an approach to nutrition that fits your lifestyle, supports your individual goals and allows flexibility. Eating a balanced variety of foods, consuming an appropriate amount of energy, staying active and developing consistent habits can help make progress more sustainable. You don't need to eat perfectly every day or give up the foods you love to improve your health.

Untimately, the problem isn't always a lack of willpower. It can be an approach that is too restrictive, unrealistic or difficult to maintain. Rather than chasing quick fixes, focus on making gradual changes that work for you. The goal isn't simply to lose weight, it is to develop a healthier lifestyle that you can maintain long after the diet is over.
