Why Did I Become a Nutrition Coach?
I had never originally thought about becoming a nutrition coach. However, I have always loved food and cooking, and over the years I’ve developed a real interest in how nutrition can impact our health, performance and everyday lives.
After finishing high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do or where I wanted to be in five years. I decided to follow in my brother’s footsteps and started a carpentry apprenticeship. Nine months later, I realised it wasn’t for me, so I handed in my notice and started looking for a different path.
I eventually found a sports college, and it immediately felt like the right direction. I had always loved sport and had been very active growing up, playing hockey alongside rugby, competing in high jump and practising Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which was my favourite.
Unfortunately, when I started college, I had to give up the sports I loved. I was also working full-time at my local health club, and with college four times a week and work five times a week, there simply wasn’t enough time to fit everything in.
During college, we covered a wide range of subjects, with nutrition being one of them. Although it was only a small part of the course, I really enjoyed it. Learning about how much of an impact nutrition can have on someone's life made me want to learn more and, eventually, help other people understand it too.
I started talking to some of the members at the health club about nutrition, probably talking their ears off more than anything! After a few weeks of sharing what I was learning, I decided to take the next step and enrol on a nutrition course. It felt like the natural thing to do because it was something I genuinely enjoyed learning about and talking about.
Eventually, I started telling some of the members that I had begun studying nutrition. To this day, they still ask me for advice, how the course is going and, most importantly, when I’m finally going to start taking on clients.
That support has been a huge motivation for me. What started as an interest during college has developed into something I’m genuinely passionate about, and I’m excited to continue learning, build my experience and eventually help people make realistic, sustainable changes to their nutrition and lifestyle.
